An all stout episode was a great idea. The local breweries to the Monterey area rarely make stouts so it’s always a treat to have one. Totality by FiftyFifty Brewing Co, which was in celebration of the last total lunar eclipse, which was an Imperial Double Stout, was amazing and surprisingly not that heavy at only 9.5%. During episode 5, I got really interested in the Imperial Western Beer Company so it was a treat to listen to your experience in this episode. It sounds very monocle-worthy. I have some co-workers who went up to Russian River for the Pliny the Younger bottle release and one dude woke up at 5am to get in line and still didn’t get his bottles until around noon or so. I was invited to go on that trip, but like Will’s comment, “it’s all right..” I don’t believe Pliny the Elder is all that wonderful, but on the other hand, The Younger was actually pretty good. My co-worker brought one of the bottles he got to a regular game night we have and shared it and it surprisingly good, but not something I’d wait in line for.

My question, in regards to the topic of beer trading and rarity, what is your opinion on saving special/rare beer for extended periods of time? I have a couple that I have in a drawer in my fridge that I am saving, but at the same time, beer doesn’t last forever so now I’m kind of waiting for the right time to open them, like with the right group of friends who will enjoy them. I also ask, because I opened a sour from a bottle that I had been keeping for a while and I noticed on the label that it was a few months past it’s “best by” date. It was still delicious, but now I want to know if the flavor profile changed at all over that time, which I’ll never know.

Looking forward to the next episode!
